Dance History 101:

This may help you understand what dance or dances you will want to try.

Here at Dancesmiths' Fred Astaire Dance Studio we teach, simply put, two kinds of dances.

1. The Smooth Dances

Sometimes called the Ballroom dances, they move counterclockwise around the floor. These tend to be the most misunderstood. Many people picture the "smooths" as the "Grandma" dances--something that only little, old ladies like. That could not be further from the truth. They require as much, or more, strength and control as the rhythm dances.
The smooth dances can be real calorie burners!

Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz.

2. The Rhythmn Dances

The rhythm dances, also known as the Latin dances, are typically the first dances requested. Fueled by movies (such as Dirty Dancing, Havana Nights, and Dance With Me), the rhythms are typically associated with Salsa, Swing, and Cha-Cha. The biggest misconception is that the faster dances provide the most exercise. The speed of some of these is perceived as a big calorie burner, but the slower tempi (bolero and rumba) can provide just as much.

Cha-Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Mambo, Samba, Merengue, Bolero, Paso Doble, Swing (East, West, Hustle, and more).

Ballroom dancing and dancesport is alive in Memphis!
